Jeffrey Light is a Washington, D.C.-based attorney who has been successfully fighting against government misconduct and secrecy for over a decade. Since earning his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 2004, Mr. Light has won many significant cases in the areas of civil rights, government transparency, and criminal defense.
Mr. Light’s law practice currently focuses on complex Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) litigation, particularly cases involving records related to law enforcement and national security issues. While such cases are among the hardest for FOIA requesters to win, Mr. Light has obtained outstanding results for his clients through his extensive experience in this specialized area of law, detailed knowledge of agency recordkeeping systems, and strong litigation skills. Mr. Light has represented a wide array of FOIA requesters, from individual journalists, historians, and authors to major media outlets and advocacy organizations.
In addition to his current work on FOIA litigation, Mr. Light has worked relentlessly throughout his career to defend the First Amendment and protect the rights of protesters, hold federal and local law enforcement officials responsible for their misconduct, fight discrimination against trans and gender non-conforming individuals, and ensure that those accused of crimes receive a fair trial and a vigorous defense.
